Alternatives to Lawn Sprinkler Systems

by Erie Insurance

Because of their convenience, ease of use and sheer effectiveness, there’s a reason people love lawn sprinkler systems. But not everyone has the money to hire a contractor to adequately install an entire system.

This doesn’t mean you can’t have a beautiful lawn year-round.  There are plenty of ways to keep your lawn watered without installing underground pipes.

For a similar effect, you can simply install your own sprinkler. Many companies sell simple units that you can easily install by burying them in your yard—no plumbing required. When you’re ready to use them, simply attach a hose to the quick-connect nozzle, turn on the water and presto—it will work just like your neighbor’s expensive system.

There are always movable sprinklers, which are the kind you might remember from when you were a kid. If you have multiple water spigots, you can have several running at the same time and use different sprinklers for different parts of your yard.

Finally, there’s always the manual way of watering your yard with a garden hose and a spray nozzle. It might take some extra time, but it lets you customize how much water each part of your lawn receives and gives you a little exercise to boot.

LAWN ALTERNATIVES

As a last alternative, you can ditch a traditional lawn altogether.  A few lawn alternatives worth considering are:

  • Low-water native plants
  • Low-water grasses that are well-adapted to your region
  • Rock gardens
  • Pea gravel for backyards
  • Synthetic grass

A professional landscaper can tell you about these and more and recommend options that will work in you region.
